Audi’s Formula 1 team has officially appointed Allan McNish as its new racing director, taking over many of the responsibilities that were previously handled by team principal Jonathan Wheatley. This move came after Wheatley’s unexpected departure in March. Consequently, Audi’s F1 CEO Mattia Binotto announced that he would also assume the team principal role, primarily focusing on factory operations, leaving the need for someone to lead during race weekends.
Binotto mentioned that they would not be seeking a new team principal, as he would require support at race weekends while concentrating on factory improvements. Allan McNish, a world endurance champion and accomplished racer with Audi, emerged as the top candidate for this role. McNish’s extensive experience within the Audi motorsport ecosystem, including Formula E and driver development programs, made him a natural fit for the position.
In his new role as racing director, McNish will oversee F1 weekends, making key sporting and performance decisions related to engineering, strategy, and driver management. He will report directly to Binotto, who praised McNish’s racing expertise, technical knowledge, and leadership qualities. McNish expressed his excitement and commitment to the role, emphasizing Audi’s legacy in motorsports and his dedication to enhancing trackside performance.
Furthermore, McNish will continue mentoring Audi’s F1 Academy drivers, signaling his comprehensive involvement in developing the team’s talent pool.
