2027 MotoGP Bikes Could Match Speeds on Half of Tracks, Says KTM

MotoGP is set to welcome new 850cc prototypes in 2027, marking a significant technical overhaul for the series. These new machines will replace the current 1000cc engines, reduce aerodynamics, and eliminate ride-height devices. Additionally, Michelin will take over as the official tyre supplier. While concerns have been raised about the potential decrease in performance due to lower power levels, Sebastian Risse, KTM’s technical chief, believes that the new regulations may not necessarily lead to slower lap times at every track.

Risse’s optimism stems from KTM’s initial tests with the 850cc bike at Jerez in December. He noted that tracks like Misano and Jerez, where full throttle is rarely used with the current 1000cc engines, may not see a drop in lap times. However, on tracks with long straights, the impact of lower power and the absence of ride-height devices may be more noticeable. Despite this, Risse sees the changes as a positive way to slow down the bikes without compromising the excitement of the races.

Looking ahead, Risse anticipates that teams will gradually improve the performance of the 850cc engines through development. Historically, KTM has seen an increase of around 5-6hp per year in engine development, a trend that is expected to continue with the smaller engine. This means that any initial deficit in power compared to the 1000cc bikes is likely to diminish over time as teams refine and optimize their machines. With the potential for ongoing improvements and developments, Risse believes that the impact on lap times may not be as significant as some predict.
