Aston Martin’s team principal, Andy Cowell, addressed speculation linking George Russell to the Silverstone team ahead of the British Grand Prix. While he did not specifically deny his interest in the British driver, he emphasized his focus on stability until 2026, implying that there was no room for the Mercedes ace. “We are very lucky. We have an exciting journey ahead to 2026,” Cowell said. “And as Christian mentioned, changing the power unit. We are working with Honda on that. Changing aerodynamics. We have Adrian working on it. We have new facilities.”
“But the stability we have by contracting Lance and Fernando for next year means that they are not only helping us develop the tools we will use for 2026, 2027, and beyond, but they are also working directly on the car concept.” In recent weeks, various reports have hinted at a closer relationship between Russell and Aston Martin, as his position at Mercedes seems increasingly uncertain. Mercedes principal Toto Wolff has confirmed that he is in talks with Max Verstappen, but so far, there have been no concrete results.
Regardless, it is understandable if Russell is having discussions himself, and Aston Martin is a team that has reportedly expressed interest in the driver. Given Aston Martin’s investment plans until 2026, it’s no wonder Russell is interested. According to Cowell, the focus is on stability along with regulation changes for next season. With advanced facilities, a Honda powertrain, and Adrian Newey as a technical partner, the team is eagerly anticipating the regulation changes.
“So, you know, wind tunnel discussions are not just about aerodynamic shape, but also about, you know, the driver environment, how much space is available in the cockpit,” Cowell continued. “Adrian intends not to leave a lot of space in the cockpit. Everything is very tight. But stability with two drivers contracted until 2026 is really helping us.” Both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll are currently under contract until 2026, and the team’s ambitions are high, with team owner Lawrence Stroll very focused on turning the team into a championship-winning team for the regulation changes.
